  Week 12 – At the Beach 

1) algae: a group of living things, mostly found in water, that can make their own food
2) concealed: put out of sight; hidden
3) driftwood: wood carried along by water, or washed ashore by the water
4) hammocks: hanging beds or couches made of canvas, cord, or other materials
5) lamented: felt or showed grief
6) sea urchins: small, round sea animals with spiny shells
7) sternly: strictly; firmly 
8) tweezers: small pincers for picking up small objects
9) shovel: a tool with a long handle and flat blade used to lift and throw large amounts of material
10) southern: coming from the south
11) northern: coming from the north
12) chapter: a main division of a book
13) hyphen: a punctuation mark - used especially to divide or to compound words, word elements, or numbers
14) chosen: selected or marked for favor or special privilege
15) establish:  to institute (something, such as a law) permanently by enactment or agreement
16) although: in spite of the fact that: even though
17) challenge: to dispute especially as being unjust, invalid, or outmoded
18) approach: to draw closer to
19) astonish: to strike with sudden and usually great wonder or surprise
20) python: any of various large constricting snake
21) shatter: to break apart
22) ethnic: of or relating to large groups of people classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background
23) shiver: to tremble in the wind as it strikes first one and then the other side (of a sail)
24) pharmacy: a place where medicines are compounded or dispensed
25) charity: generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering
26) china:  delicate porcelain material used for dishes or decoration  
27) attach: to bind by personal ties (as of affection or sympathy)
28) ostrich: the largest species of bird, which have long necks and legs and cannot fly
29) brine: salted water used for pickling food

30) vial: a small closed or closable vessel especially for liquids

1) country: the land of a person's birth, residence, or citizenship
2) interpret: to explain or tell the meaning of
3) imagine: to form a mental image of (something not present)
4) homeland: native land
5) immigrant: a person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence
6) freedom: the quality or state of being free
7) religion: a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices
8) escape: to get free of; break away from
9) famine: an extreme scarcity of food
10) opportunities: a good chance for advancement or progress
11) foreman: a person in charge of a group of workers, a particular operation, or a section of a plant
12) accomplish: to bring to completion

14) bulldozer: a tractor-driven machine usually having a broad horizontal blade for moving earth
15) jackhammers: a tool that drills through rock by hitting it very hard and quickly

27) tamper:  to interfere so as to weaken or change for the worse 
28) gravel: loose rounded fragments of rock
29) ballast: something that gives stability (as in character or conduct)
30) mammoth: of very great size
